Black Hound Clay Studio SOUTH seeks to create an inclusive, fun, creative learning environment for every student that walks through our doors. We promise attentive and approachable staff and teachers, accommodation for various learning styles and a positive and inspirational vibe.

All instruction, tools, glazes. firing and 25 pounds of clay are included in the price of tuition. Additional clay can be purchased on our website. One free open studio is included with every class.

PAYMENT PLAN TERMS:
If you select an installment payment plan when checking out, you will pay a 1/3 deposit upon registration for class. The 2nd payment will be deducted using your credit card on file on Friday, May 24 and your third payment will be deducted on Friday, June 21. Class must be paid in full to attend.

class waitlist Policy

Once a class is full, the class listing will be converted to a waitlist sign up. Signing up for the waitlist is free. Joining the waitlist for a particular class does not guarantee you a spot in that class, and it does not obligate you to sign up should space come available.

Wheelthrowing Classes

  • Beginning wheelthrowing: Monday Evenings

    Monday Evenings June 24 - August 12, 6-9 pm (8 weeks)

    In this fun, informal class, students will explore techniques for creating beautiful ceramic pieces using the potter’s wheel. Form, function, and various surface treatments will be presented. Classes are tailored to individual students’ interests and abilities. This course is designed for total beginners to clay, however, all levels of experience are welcome.

  • BEGINNING WHEELTHROWING: Tuesday Evenings

    Tuesday Evenings July 2 - August 20 6-9 pm (8 weeks)

    Learn the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel in this introductory ceramics course - no experience necessary! Students will learn all that goes into bringing basic cups, mugs, bowls and more to fruition. We'll discuss best practices in mechanics and technique, the various transformations clay undergoes at each stage of the making process, and a few of the countless ways to alter the surfaces of forms. This course is perfect for anyone looking to get out of their comfort zone and learn a new skill.

  • WHEELTHROWING 102: BEYOND THE BASICS : Thursday Evenings

    Thursday Evenings June 27- August 22, 6-9 pm (8 weeks) (No class July 4)

    This class is designed for the experienced beginner in mind. If you have some have previous wheel throwing experience and are looking to push your skills to the next level, this class is for you. Students will be led through warm-up throwing exercises and activities to help improve technical ability and trouble shoot problem areas. We will focus on lifting taller, thinner and more consistent walls, shaping, trimming, surface design and attachments. Students will be encouraged to work towards developing a matching set such as cups, mugs, bowls or vases as a way to sharpen skills.

HANDBUILDING CLASSES

  • Handbuilding for the Home: Monday Evenings

    Monday Evenings June 24 - August 12, 6-9pm (8 weeks)

    This class will focus on exploring handbuilding techniques like pinching, coiling and soft and hard slab construction to create items for the table and for the home, from mugs to plates to planters and more. Functionality and durability will be explored, as well as a variety of surface decorating techniques to make your projects truly unique and one of a kind.

  • BEGINNING HANDBUILDING: Tuesday Evenings

    Tuesday Evenings June 25 - August 13, 6-9 pm (8 weeks)

    This introductory class will focus on a breadth of what you can create using foundational handbuilding skills. We will explore not only vessel making like mugs and bowls, but will also touch on making sculptural and decorative objects. Various surface decorating techniques will also be presented to enhance your ideas. Students are encouraged to develop their own style and voice through functional and decorative ceramic objects.

  • BEGINNING HANDBUILDING FOR SCULPTURE

    Wednesday Evenings June 26 - August 14, 6-9 pm (8 weeks)

    This class’s projects will be inspired by decorative household objects, like planters, pet portraits, antique figurines, and other sculptural items for the tabletop or wall. We will cover coil building open and closed forms; solid sculpting and hollowing; and developing rich, dimensional surfaces. Dig into working with clay for the first time, or build some new skills as we test what clay can do beyond the vessel.

    In this class students will be exploring various printing techniques on clay. This will include screen printing, transfer, stencils and more. Whether vessel or tile, printing is a great way to illustrate the surface of your work. This class is great for both beginners and intermediate students.
